The Mexican Sketchbook

On a trip to Mexico I bought this little sketchbook made of handmade bark paper and in it something different happened...

I found that the mind insists on making a connection between images and meaning. My intention with these drawings was to combine images specifically without reason. I was inspired by the tradition of Dias Los Meurtas in which an entire culture has made the unlikely connection between death and happiness. The two don't seem to go together but when they do it has profound impact. To my surprise and delight these drawings too have found meaning. Was it my subconscious mind that chose what only seemed random but actually had connection? Or was it my conscious mind that couldn't rest without concocting a conclusion? Either way they thrive with allusions to untold tales and unrevealed identities.
